Member - A person who has attained the age of 21 yrs and has additionally worked in a sector or sectors of the legal industry for an aggregate period of three years and undertaken such course of instruction as prescribed or approved by the Council or has been exempted there from by the Council and has satisfied the Council as to his/her fitness to be admitted as a Member.
Associate - A person who has attained the age of 19 yrs, has undertaken such course of instruction as prescribed by the Institute and has been awarded one of the recognised courses, (or another recognised law course at a University).
Fellow - A person who has attained the age of 26 yrs, has undertaken such course of instruction as prescribed by the Institute and has been awarded one of the recognised courses (or another recognised law course at University) and IN ADDITION has “qualifying employment” for an aggregate minimum of 8 years.
Qualifying employment is defined as whole time employment in the office of a legal practitioner either in private practice or in any office Department, Instrumentality or Agency of Government (State or Federal) or any Municipality or local authority or commercial undertaking. This therefore includes State or Federal Police Officers, employees of WA Ministry of Justice, Department of Land Information, WA Department of Consumer & Employment Protection, WA Legal Aid, State and Commonwealth Solicitors, Australian Taxation Office and DPP etc.
How to Apply for Membership
You must complete and lodge the attached Application form:
(i) Complete PART A with your personal details and those of the person vouching for your good character;
(ii) Complete PART B to establish eligibility for Membership as a Student;
(iii) Complete PART C to establish eligibility for Membership as a Member;
(iv) Complete PART D to establish eligibility for Membership as either an Associate or Fellow;
(i) For applications for the category of Fellow please complete Part E to show that you have a total of at least 8 years “qualifying employment” (see definition above);
(vi) Date and sign the bottom of each page ensuring PART F Certification Section has been completed on Page 7;
(i) Send to the address listed on the application form, the completed Application, attachments and appropriate fee in Cheque or Money Order made out to “The Institute of Legal Executives WA”. Direct debit facilities are available by contacting the Treasurer, Mr Wesley Ward at ilexwa@live.com
For the 2011/2012 membership year this is $65 for Fellows, $50 for Associates, $40 for Members, $15 for Retirees, $25 for Student Members in full employment and for all other Students $10.
Once membership is accepted, the “Application Fee” becomes the membership contribution for the balance of the membership year which expires on the 31st of March.
